Eat fresh at Great Falls Bert and Ernie’s Farm2Table event

Bert and Ernie’s serves local, organic food items from five area farms on Saturday at the inaugural Farm2Table event.

The meal is set for Saturday night starting at 6 p.m. in an outdoor tent behind Bert and Ernie’s. Local musician Joe Ryan brings the tunes and food will be provided by  Prairie Heritage Farm, Groundworks Farm, Parker Farms and Greenhouse and Land of Grass who provides the lamb. Tilleraas Landscaping, will add to the ambiance with hay bales, trees and festive accessories. 2J’s Fresh Market is a co-sponsor of the event, also.

Farm2Table 1Janet Neil, owner/chef at Bert and Ernie’s, said they will be serving items that are in season around the area such as Montana Pork Pot Pie, French lamb chop with Farrow grain, roasted cauliflower, fresh salad with spinach and fresh arugula. Each meal will be paired with a fresh wine, also.

Neil said the idea is weaved into Bert and Ernie’s mission to provide organic, local food to Great Falls and serve as a conduit between the farmers and the consumers.

“Basically, since I have taken over a Bert and Ernies, I have been trying to progressively get us in local and organic food,” Neil said. “The grassroots movement has been going on all over the world really and I really wanted to be first person to start bringing it together here. We have amazing farmers already and an amazing farmer’s market and 2J’s, but we don’t have a restaurant that puts it all together.

Neil said her goal is to give people a place to try local organic food and help raise awareness of it’s existence.

“People can come try the food and we can be a link to the farmers as well,” she said. “It’s … all about creating a circle within our community. No place does that yet.”

Neil said this is the first of three events planned, each held at a different growing season. She said if the response continues to grow, she’ll look at adding more, also. People interested in the meal must call and make reservations before Saturday.

“We don’t have very many spots left at all; it’s been well received already, but I would encouraged people interested at all should call anyway so we can get them on a list. If it’s even more well received then that, I’ll have 3 more or however many more we need to have.”
