Anne Steele shows off her pop prowess with poise on ‘Made Out of Stars’
Hearing Anne Steele on her latest album, “Made Out of Stars,” a few things surprised me. Firstly, I was surprised that she’s not already signed to a major record label like Sony, Capitol or Universal. Secondly, I was surprised at how much range she shows from one song to the next. Each track sits firmly in the pop genre, but, on one track she’s laying down a delicate ballad about past memories in “I Miss Those Days,” and the next she’s singing in a retro, 1990s Janet Jackson style on “Obsessed,” among the others.
At just seven songs, “Made Out of Stars,” is just a taste of Steele’s skills, but, what she does present here showcases a lot of confidence and experience. She shows off the power of her vocals especially on the Tears for Fears’ cover “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” and the two takes of her single “Love Can Take Us There,” the acoustic version and the new ‘2019 Nash Overstreet’ version that she put together with Overstreet late last year.
Both tracks start differently, have a different tone and speed and almost could be entirely separate songs if not for the lyrics. Whereas the Nash Overstreet version has an upbeat dance feel to it, the acoustic version slows it down a bit and feels like a more intimate take on the song with just Steele and the guitar backing.
Steele’s first EP of original music titled “What’s Mine” came out in 2015 and she toured extensively throughout the US and abroad. She recently performed along side Cyndi Lauper at the Home For The Holidays concert at The Beacon Theater in NYC for the True Colors Fund. The original verison of “Love Can Take Us There”, was released in 2016, with all proceeds benefiting the victims of The Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando. The single also was chosen as the Provincetown Carnival Anthem for 2016.
Overstreet co-produced “Made Out of Stars,” with Shane Stevens. A solo artist in his own right, Overstreet is a multi-platinum, American Music Award, two-time BMI Pop award winner who had early success with his band Hot Chelle Rae. His band went on to sell over 7 million singles worldwide and Nash has toured the world opening for acts like Taylor Swift, Demi Lovato and Justin Bieber, along with penning songs for Brittney Spears, Meghan Trainor, and Rachel Platten, among others.
“Made Out of Stars” is out now. Steele has release concerts in January in LA and NYC. She will then begin her “Made Out Of Stars Tour” that will play London, Boston, Atlanta, Chicago, Rehoboth Beach, San Diego, Dallas, Palm Springs and more cities to be announced.
