8 famous people from Montana who make uptight conservatives uncomfortable
Montana, as you might know, is a bit of a conservative place.
There’s a lot of people who believe we’re all about old-fashioned values and that everyone owns at least 5 handguns and worships everything John Wayne ever did.
And as such, there are indeed several famous Montanans who also held at least some of those same conservative values. People such as Chet Huntley, Dirk Benedict, Patrick Duffy and Gary Cooper.
Montana isn’t always what it seems at first glance, however. There also are several famous Montanans who conservatives would rather sweep under the rug and pretend they don’t exist.
Lucky for you, dear reader, I’ve compiled a list of 8 famous people who either grew up in Montana or live here now, who aren’t ever going to get an invitation to the GOP National Convention.
And, please note I made an effort not to fill this list all with porn stars, because that would be too easy. There are a few here worth mentioning, however.
It’s also worth keeping into consideration that obviously there are many successful women in Montana who are not in porn. This article does not wish to equate that the best way for a woman to succeed in Montana is by getting into pornography. Only that the these actresses who have gotten into the industry are quite famous despite the haters who think what they do is morally reprehensible.
So, let’s get to it.
8) Jesse Tyler Ferguson
This talented actor from Missoula is most famously known for his role as Mitchell Pritchett on the hit ABC show Modern Family. He’s also gay. Which, let’s give some credit where credit is due, not all conservatives have a problem with. However, many do, especially flaming homosexuals.
Ferguson is gay and proud of it.
He’s also a talented, funny actor. I totally forgot he was from Missoula, but now that I’v rediscovered his Montana roots, I think it’s awesome that I can include him on this list.
It’s people like him, gay actors who also play gay characters, who are doing a lot to change the opinions of people who still have a hard time seeing gay people on TV. We can only hope that as this country continues to evolve, there will be more like Ferguson who can not only be gay in real life, but play someone who’s also gay.
7) David Lynch
Just like Ferguson, Lynch is another Missoula native (I’m sensing a theme here.)
Lynch’s best work is likely his role creating “Twin Peaks.” Which, is quite possibly some of the most absurd shows ever produced, particularly the dream sequences. Lynch might be higher on this list, but the fact that he’s identified himself as somewhat of a conservative makes him a littler harder to hate, perhaps.
However, Lynch has made a name for himself by doing his own thing, no matter what anyone else thinks. He’s said in interviews he admired Ronald Reagan, but he’s long been a third party supporter, but he claims to be non-political.
He’s been out of the public eye for quite a while now, with his last full-length project 2006’s Inland Empire. He’s set to return to his roots in 2016, however, as it was recently announced that he’ll be back to direct the new reboot of Twin Peaks for Showtime.
Many Conservatives will find Lynch’s wild style too bizarre and free to appeal to them. And while he’s never called himself a liberal, liberal folks tend to love his work.
Regardless, I think his talent should be appreciated no matter what your politics are. Some people, however, must make EVERYTHING political, and as such, they’ll never fully come to understand or appreciate the beauty that is a complex David Lynch movie such as “Wild at Heart” or “The Elephant Man,” among others.
6) Victoria Paris
This porn star from Great Falls would be higher on this list, but the fact that she’s not all that well known leaves her a little lower compared to other more well-known Montanans.
Paris, now 53, appeared in 200 adult films. She’s also a member of the AVN Hall of Fame. Say what you will about porn stars, but clearly Ms. Paris was doing something right in her given field.
5) Michelle Williams
Now, you might be thinking, wait, why would conservatives hate Michelle Williams, other than the fact that she’s an actress?
Well, firstly she’s an excellently talented actress, and secondly, conservatives would point to her role in “Brokeback Mountain” as a reason to hate on her.
If you really want to dig into her filmography, she also was in “But I’m a Cheerleader” which is about a high school girl coming to grips with the fact that she’s a lesbian despite being a cheerleader.
Again, Williams should be applauded as being one of Montana’s greatest exports into Hollywood. She’ was nominated an Oscar, for her role in Brokeback Mountain, ba da boom, and has won many, many other awards for her acting over the years. She’s also recently returned to the Broadway stage, where she played Sally Bowles in “Cabaret.”
4) Dana Carvey
Another Missoulian, Carvey literally did a character on SNL that made fun of Conservative values in the Church Lady. Now, isn’t that special?
Carvey’s star has dimmed a bit in recent years, but in the 1990s all the way through the early 2000s, he was a big deal. His biggest role will always be Garth Algar opposite Mike Meyers in Wayne’s World. But, conservatives can hate on him for the fact that he’s also done killer impersonations of George Bush (probably one of the best, in fact) and Ross Perot.
3) Reggie Watts
One of Great Falls’ most famous comedians, if not THE most well known comedian to come from the Electric City, continues to confound and frustrate conservatives across the country with his free-flowing, improvised musical material and his acceptance of free love and creativity.
All things that will make people who sit on the far right want to puke.
I’ve had the chance to interview Reggie, and I can honestly say he’s been one of my most favorite celebrities I’ve ever met. He’s just a down-to-earth dude who happens to be insanely talented musically and as a comedian. If you’re a crazy conservative reading this and you haven’t heard of Reggie, check out Comedy Bang Bang on Netflix and that should give you more than a few things to hate on. You’ll thank me later!
2) Tera Patrick
So, I save the last two spots for the biggest porn stars Montana has ever seen living in it’s state.
First up is miss Tera Patrick, who was born in Great Falls. She honestly didn’t live too long in the Electric City before moving to San Francisco, but she did live here, so she makes the list.
Patrick started her adult career in 1999 and in 2003 became a contracted “Vivid Girl”.
She retired from the biz in 2008, but continues to operate her website, production company, and pursue other business avenues. She also licenses her movie catalog worldwide.
We really don’t need to say much about why conservatives can hate on her, other than she’s done something really, really well and has made a lot of money doing it, even if it’s in an industry that’s somehow seen as “dirty.” Even though at least 70 percent of males in the U.S. watch porn.
If you think it’s wrong, that’s fine, there are certainly arguments to make that are worth hearing, however, I think it’s a bit short-sighted to hate on individual performers, unless perhaps you’re…..
1) Jenna Jameson
What makes Jenna different from other porn stars? Quite simply, she was, from 2001 to 2008, the biggest porn star the world has ever seen. That also makes her an easy target.
Except, if you take away what she does for a minute, conservatives could never hate on her. Because, really, if she did anything else besides have sex on camera, she’d be seen by conservatives as a self-made millionaire who knew what she wanted to do and then did it.
When she signed her first big contract with Wicked pictures, she told company founder Steve Orenstein, “The most important thing to me right now is to become the biggest star the industry has ever seen.”
And, if you’re wondering how Montana can claim her, in her autobiography “How to Make Love Like a Porn Star: A Cautionary Tale” that she grew up on a ranch outside of Fromberg, a small town of 441 people outside of Billings, and attended high school there.
So there you have it. What do you think of this list? Is there anyone we missed? Leave us a comment!
